I spoke yesterday at Western Seminary on the Missional Church. It was a good time, but after two hours of that, and two hours later of theology pub, I'm fried. Fried, fried, fried...
And sad. But that's a story for another time.
For any interested, here's the outline I used yesterday. Note well- It's all stolen! If you see Keller's words, Frost's words, FriendofMissional's words, or even your words in this document, be flattered- I only steal from the best!
Seriously though- precious little of this is original, so...

Consider yourself reported to the authorities.

If you get an audio file please post it up.
Can I get the source for the 89/11% statistic you gave near the beginning? I'd like to use it in a teaching next week, and I like to have sources handy in case anyone asks.
Thanks

Your friends at FoM say, "VERY nicely done!"
Along with Brett, I'd love to have a source for the statistic's you quoted. Do they make the point or what?
Question Bob. Did you feel a needed to tailor or slant the talk in any particulor way based upon the audience you had at Western?

Ahh- the survey. That info was in the notes I got from Dr. Johnson- The reason I was teaching was that he was travelling- so he gave me his notes, some of which I incorporated.
I did a google search though, and here's what I found.
Apparently... gulp... this statistic is quoted in the Purpose Driven Church. So I guess I was quoting Rick Warren...
I did also find this, though...
Why does the church exist?
[Win Arn survey of1000 churches]
To Win the World forChrist
To Care for the Needs
of Members
Pastors
90%
10%
Members
11%
89%
“If the pastor and congregation can’t even agree on why the
church exists, conflict and disagreement on everything else is
inevitable.”[War95, 82]
I looked up "Win Arn" and found "Win Arn... founded The Institute for American Church Growth. This Institute, and its counterpart in Canada, the Institute for Canadian Church Growth, produce films and seminars that reach all areas of the North America."
One online source quoted (It looks like a prety direct quote- I don't have the book anymore, so I'm not sure) The Purpose Driven Church: "Win Arn, a consultant to churches, once told about a survey he took. He surveyed members of nearly a thousand churches asking the question, "Why does the church exist?" Of the church members surveyed, 89 percent said, "The church's purpose is to take care of my family's needs and my needs." He concluded that for many churches, the role of the pastor is simply to keep the sheep who are already in the "pen" happy and not lose too many of them. Only 11 percent said, "The purpose of the church is to win the world for Jesus Christ." (Purpose-Driven Church, page 82)"

And I didn't really feel like I had to tailor anything for the Western Audience. In fact, I was given an invitation to soeak at the upcoming Off The Map deal in Seattle- I turned it down because I felt like I really didn't have much to say that would be value added for that particular crowd. I wish I had had this outline...
I think for Western's students, certain parts of it were challenging and for the Off The Map attendees, maybe different parts would have been.
See- that's what I love about the missional church emphasis...

Rick Warren is quoted as saying: "Plagiarism is borrowing from one person, research is borrowing from five, and borrowing from ten or more is shear creativity!"
