Reverse Mentoring
I've had in my head for probably a couple of years now some thoughts on reverse mentoring, and had always meant to write something on it until, like most good ideas, I began to see others were there ahead of me. But lately, I'm realizing my take on it is different... Most, when they talk about reverse mentoring mean older leaders leaning into relationship with younger ones in order to gain the benefit of the more up-to-date expertise and insight into culture the younger ones bring. In that sense, the older leaders become "mentored" by the younger ones. It's a fine idea in many contexts and probably absolutely needed in some... but it's not what I was thinking. In that scenario, the older leader really is being "mentored" by the younger, though no doubt some wisdom is flowing the other way. But the intent behind the whole thing is what I'm wanting to get at- this relationship is initiated and engaged in mainly for the benefit of the older leader. In my mind, true reverse mentoring looks similar- but still exists primarily for the benefit of the one being mentored, the younger leader. I have a relationship with a guy...

Want to know if you are preaching right?
I wouldn't call this exactly scientific, but... I love dropping sermons into Wordle.net. Tells me if I'm keeping the main thing the main thing. This week, I think I managed to as we walked through John 3 and the story of Nicodemus...

Ha! There's much truth in this cartoon.

Wow! It's always amazing how succinctly a good cartoon get the point made.
This idea of those who question orthodoxy (both in science as well as religion) being labeled as heretics hits close to home for me right now. I have been battling a series of health problems common to Americans and have come to realize that, nutritionally speaking, my doctors have been trying to kill me for the past 15 years by restricting meats and fats from my diets while heaping on the fruits, vegetables and grains -something the human animal never evolved to embrace healthily.
Yet whenever someone presents the (ample) science that questions the wisdom of making fat and not carbohydrates the source of diabetes, obesity and heart disease, they are roundly and thoroughly denounced by the ostriches running the academia.
So my solution is to say "Screw 'em! Give me meat or give me death!"
