A Muslim teaches us...
One of the great challenges of our pluralistic times is to be tolerant without becoming antagonistic or descending into either the "we're *all* right" or "nobody really knows (we're all wrong)" silliness of relativism. I loved this on a Muslim professor at a Christian college and what he has to say to Christians. "Dr. Eboo Patel is a Muslim who teaches interfaith leadership at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. He has important ministry lessons for Christians. He goes beyond saying what you believe is right and what I believe is right so let’s be friends (which describes a lot of interfaith dialogue I’ve seen) and you are the enemy and I must prove you’re wrong and maybe bad (which describes many debates I’ve seen). We live in a religiously diverse world. That is a fact. Some simply give in to relativism and believe that all paths lead to God. Others tend to cultivate an us vs. them mentality that sees people of others faiths as enemies. He wants to take a third path where we respect one another, work with one another, care for one another and at the same time make truth claims that may contradict one another. It...

The God of the OT vs the God of the NT
I hate the very premise of the "God of the OT vs the God of the NT" question- you know, the one that sets up within the question itself an unresolveable dichotomy between a God of violence (the OT) and a God of love and compassion (the NT). I hate it mostly because it gives credence to what, for many, had been a faith-destroying red herring. The truth is, there's only one God revealed in Scripture. The LORD, the maker of heaven and earth, the one whom both OT and NT reveal to be a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. BUT... That there are pretty stark differences in how that God has dealt with humans throughout history is undeniable. WHY those differences exist is a vital question I think everyone should have some answer for. For a couple years, since I began thinking through this issue, I have explained it this way: The OT is a record of what doesn't work. It's God patiently allowing and even at times commanding His people to try all the ways of the people around them, one by one, all the while pointing towards Jesus. In the...
