(Warning: The following post will strike many of you as crass and pathetic. If you think you might be among those whom it hits that way, please read no further, or at least refrain from complaining. You have been warned!)
You know what I miss most about working at Ye Ol' Mega Church?
Go, on... guess!
No, not the frequent leftovers from the (really, really good) Ladies Luncheons.
No, not the Christmas bonus from the special offering taken for staff, though that was pretty sweet, particularly since both my wife and I got one as we were both on the payroll.
No, the thing I miss most is...
Technology upgrades.
Yeah- I had a pretty sweet, (at the time) blazingly fast G4 tower. Loved it. New program would come out? Most of the time, I could get it.
Now, I'm not advocating profligate spending by churches on needless tech... You know me better than that.
But if there's one tool I have used every day of this church plant, for hours a day, for everything from personal contacts to building our website to talking theology on our forum, it's... my laptop!
My trusty Powerbook.
I got it in the early stages of planting evergreen, and it hasn't failed me yet, though it's easily on for at least 8-10 hours a day (I know, I know...)
We recently brought our Associate Pastor on, but we haven't been able to even think about providing him with a laptop yet. He's been using his wife's iBook (I know, I know...). I'm not sure when the money is going to be there to upgrade me or even get anything for Chris. We're a poor little church plant with no denominational support, remember? :)
So... (anyone see where this is going? Last chance to get out before it gets crass and pathetic!) I've been thinking about this all day, and I'm thinking a couple of thoughts I'd like to share with you.
1. I'd like to get a MacBook. The old PowerBook is cool, but tends to catch if we run video on it, even with a ton of RAM. Also, the PC we've been running Mediashout on is about on its last legs. The MacBook would let us run our current PC version of Medishout until the long awaited Mac version comes out.
Plus, I would just love to have it- let's be honest. :) And I'm just not going to be able to afford it on my allowance...
2. I'd like to pass my current 12-inch PowerBook onto Chris, our Associate Pastor. When I got the PowerBook, I gave the G3 iBook I had bought (for $1500 stinkin' dollars!!!) to our worship guy, Rich. Karma, man... karma!
So- here's the pitch.
I'm starting a paypal campaign to get Bob a MacBook (and therefore Chris a PowerBook), and I need your help.
Please :)
If you are a regular reader of this blog, if it's been helpful or entertaining for you, or if you've gotten use out of the media I post (King of the Hill video, weekly slides, etc) then throw a church planter $.99 won't you?
I know- there are a lot of better places for your money to go- that's why I'm not asking for much. Just one time getting the Grande instead of the Venti, you know? A buck.
I have some special rates as well-
Other Church Planters- $.75 (and when you do your campaign for a MacBook, I promise to push it for you and contribute to yours!)
People Who are Planning to Plant a Church, but Still Working at Ye Ol' Mega Church- $2 (C'mon... find a way to expense it!)
People who showed the King of The Hill video in your church gathering- $1.50 (Hey- that's cheaper than a video on iTunes!)
People who love Chris more than me- $.99 (Help me help Chris! Help me help Chris!)
People who gave birth to me- $5 (C'mon Mom...)
Rich Uncles who may or may not read this blog but who definitely own expensive raceboats- Give as you feel "led" :)
Okay- that's my pitch. Help a church planter get a MacBook. If you like my blog, gimme $.99. :)
I promise I'll use it only for good and never for evil.
As a special added bonus, I'm going to be re-posting for the next week or two some of the best of bob.blog. So, if you are a newer reader, stay tuned for some good stuff. And give me $.99.
I promise you'll feel really good about yourself after you do.
Really!
