The Sumner House is one of our Community Houses where people are living together in "intentional community", that is, living together in a way that blesses, challenges and shares life.
Much more than just roomies...


Here's an excerpt:


"Why am I here? Why have I chosen to live in community? To be honest, I don’t know where else I would go. This is where life is found. This is where I am challenged to give myself to those around me, to die to myself, to live out loud, to love beyond my ability to love. This is where people come into your room at 12:30 to tell you they love you, or to ask you to pray with them. This is where love is born. I need my space invaded, I need to learn how to let others come in and tell me they love me. Where else could I go to find this stuff?"

Why gather? (I posted this early this morning on our forum, and have asked the elders if I can send it as a "pastoral letter" via email to our whole evergreen community...) Why Gather? It's a good question... Why get together? Since day one (literally) Christians have been gathering together to do a variety of things. At first they met in homes and (as long as they were allowed to) the Jewish places of worship they had grown up in and were used to. Eventually, they were driven underground by persecution, even at times being forced to meet in secret in places like catacombs (underground tombs/passages). When Christianity was not only legalized, but made into a state religion (thanks a lot, Constantine...), Christians were able to meet in groups larger than homes would accomodate and their gatherings shifted into buildings that were constructed for that purpose. One thing that I'm realizing we need to talk about and process as a community is why. Not only are there reasons for gathering, but (I feel) good reasons. As I've often said on Sundays, we get together to do with others that which we can't do alone... to pray with others and worship with others...
