Evergreen and Advertising... Different sized (and aged) churches require different approaches to advertising and publicity. From the very beginning, we avoided advertising at evergreen... our thought was simply that if we didn't grow by the quality of our relationships (as opposed to the quality of our advertising), we didn't deserve to grow. Now, that's a pretty hard line, and needs some nuancing. This stance meant that though we have never advertised in print media, doing the postcard route or taking out adds in places, I did go to lengths to have a decent presence on the internet. We also spend maybe $5 a month on google ad words. The thought was that if people are actively looking for us, they should be able to find us. A couple of weeks ago, I saw some thoughts along a similar vein from Tim Keller's Redeemer Church in New York. Though their policy comes from a slightly different place (they are big enough, in their minds, and want to focus on planting churches rather than growing ever larger) there are similarities... and they say it much better than I do. Their policy is: We do not provide interviews or participate in stories; we do not desire...

Don't Forget to Grieve... Here's an article I wrote a couple years ago... Just some thoughts as we approach Good Friday. Don’t Forget To Grieve I once attended a Good Friday service where the pastor encouraged us to look at Good Friday positively, to see the crucifixion through “Easter eyes.” I could only shake my head at this massive misunderstanding and missed opportunity. His intentions were good… He didn’t want anyone to feel bad. He wanted to protect us from feeling defeated as we meditated on the death of Christ. It’s completely understandable. But in doing so, he robbed us of exactly the feeling and experience that Good Friday is meant to give us. Many of us who inhabit the sphere of “American Christianity” live in a world that doesn’t know when, how or even why to grieve. For us, Christianity is about victory, it’s about feeling better about ourselves. It’s upbeat, inspiring, short and peppy. I even know one pastor of a large church who has asked his worship leaders not to do any songs written in a minor key. Too much of a downer. Like all of us, I was hit hard by the events of Fall, 2001. I was up early...
