Good to know... the real issue is simply that we are young and stupid. What an erudite critique!
I'm a husband, father, pastor and church planter
Ok...now I am mad. I could barely make it through. I am almost 40 years old--I don't think this is "youthful rebellion".

He has to be kidding

I don't know dude. I just couldn't watch past the 1 minute mark. It took him all of about that long to refer to an entire generation of people as "ridiculous" and "foolish." Since those were the presuppositions going into this rant, then I just couldn't bring myself to invest the other 7 minutes.
Posted by: ShaneBertou | March 13, 2007 at 07:30 AM
I don't even need to watch it - besides, I can't bring myself to listen to a man who wears a teal and navy polo ;)

He thinks we are a bunch of fornicators....
I wonder if "Young and stupid" is less offensive to a brit?

I do love the way he says "chuhch" though. I might start using the myself.
Posted by: John | March 13, 2007 at 08:23 AM
if you watch to the end, though, you can finally understand why "beat music" has such a horrific effect on the empty-headed youth!
and the final warning that scrolls at the end is priceless!
Posted by: david | March 13, 2007 at 08:30 AM
On the one hand, he says we follow Satan's "hoary head," but then he says it's about hairstyles. But to be truly Emergent, you have to shave your head, right?

Bashing thrashing and crashing... now we know.
I honestly think I'm a little dumber for watching that. Wow.
Posted by: Doug Robertson | March 13, 2007 at 10:06 AM
I watched this twice.
I think I was pretty shocked the first time. This man is pretty much absolutely unbelievable.
The second time I watched it... I found it both hilarious and saddening.
We just need to pray for him and those like him. *sigh*

How can something be comical and sad at the same time!? :) :(

I bet he couldn't wait until he was old enough to make this video. He has described exactly how legalism gets passed through generations.
Besides the "youthful stupidity and foolishness" he doesn't start getting to his point until there are about 4:15 left.
Does he know that you can't have music without a beat? You can't even have most poetry without rhythm or beat.
One Biblical quotation would have gone a long way, but I don't think being Biblical was what he had in mind.
David's right. The last 5 seconds with the final scroll made my jaw drop even in comparison to the rest of the video.

Ummmm...wow. How does old and stupid work into all of this? No need to answer, this fellow did a nice job of addressing that with his 8 minutes of rambling.
I'm going to go listen to my beat music now.

I would argue with him, but then again I'm young and stupid. :)
Posted by: Kevin Rush | March 13, 2007 at 12:35 PM
fleshy?
is that a word?
Posted by: nathan | March 13, 2007 at 01:35 PM
Fleshy is a word. I think certain kinds of fruit are fleshy. I've never heard people described this way.
I guess my main question is at what age are we old enough to have church our way? Because I can't wait to make those punk kids light candles and worship to beat music. It's gonna be soooo sweet.
Seriously though, I was once accused of introducing asherah poles into my worship. It was actually a guitar, but you get the idea.

I think he might equate respect with control. I know of many an "elder" board filled with people who have a lot of experience, think they have wisdom and have driven their churches into the ground over the course of 30 years of insular, "know-it-all" attitudes.
recognizing that must be very very very disrespectful of me...
too bad their ego is more important than offloading approaches or attitudes that get in the way of ministry.

I wanted to know if this is an example of "older and wiser"? If so, and we are learning from him, no wonder we are so much "younger and stupid"...
Personally I have always gotten we were trying to get away from the "fleshy" modernism and "fleshy" flash and get to what is important and genuine.
This man's ignorance is amazing... the more I watch... actually could not "watch" as he is "old and boring" (he he) so i listened... and being that he has an accent I was able to get through it... I pretended it was N.T. Wright in a drunken stupor and pretending he was as dumb as a stump...
You know his summary about sums is all up... "if you ain't saved, why are you in church in the first place?"
Don't worry dude I wont be going to your church anytime soon...
the funny thing is I have a guy in town who has written this same thing... "the emergents aren't saved, you need to witness to them to get them saved, but we must separate from the ungodly and not let them in our churches..."
No wonder we are in rebellion... at age 42 I do not see myself "youthful"... but thank God I am not as "wise" in my own eyes as this poor sad sack...
All this video does is confirm to me more I am on the right path... and that some people mistake religion for following Jesus.
Blessings,
iggy

I still can't shake the feeling that this is a parody.

Come on! Fleshy nonsense? That is my new favorite thing to say!
Posted by: Dan Z. | March 13, 2007 at 08:34 PM
I'm sorry, but I have to say it...
He forgot the part where the worship leaders "wiggle their hips from side to side".
Posted by: lily | March 13, 2007 at 09:15 PM
I think I'm going to cry. I cannot believe anyone would be this arrogant, nor so completely misguided.
Oh, and Spring Harvest a 'flesh-fest' - roflmao!

bob,
i posted this at my place and was surprised that it turned into a discussion of 70s folk music, the reformation, and the emerging church...??>!?!
maybe you or some of your "emerging-type" friends can drop in and weigh in...
being as how i'm not really emerged, but remain tied to evangelicalism i have a hard time speaking for you young and stoopid folks.
