Restarting Preaching with Dialogue series...

Okay... I'm bad. BadNot bad in the Michael Jackson/late 80's sense of the word. Just bad in the "I started doing some posting on preaching with dialogue and then let life kick my butt and got distracted and undisciplined and didn't finish it" sense.

You know... that sense.

So I'm now using all my new found margin to get back to substantive posting!

Actually, my lovely and beautiful wife is kicking me out of the house for part of Fridays now as "reading and writing day" in my week. Have I told you guys how insanely cool my wife is? In fact, if you Google "Hot Pastor's Wives", guess who you find??? Pretty cool, eh? Kinda...

Anyway. I'm going to re-run the first couple of posts from "series" to get things rolling again...

The shootings... I don't really have much to say in the face of yesterday's events. It is so odd to be so far away from an event (geographically distant) and yet watch it unfold via the internet throughout the day, hear the voices of those involved, actually see the face of the young man that did this terrible thing. Since becoming a father, my whole take on violence has changed. I don't enjoy seeing it portrayed, I don't like to think about it... my thoughts almost always run to my own kids, and how fragile my hold on them is in this sometimes dark world. So, again... not much to say. I think I try NOT to think about things like this... I know that's not the correct response necessarily, but it's mine. When these things happen, I suppose we have a choice as to how we will think about it- Not at all- avoidance Nihilistically- life is just a series of random tragedies anyway Selfishly- I hope my freinds/family were okay Sociologically- What caused this? How can we prevent it in the future? Legally- Is now the time to talk about gun control? Angrily- How could that man be such a...

Preaching With Dialogue... pt 1 First some disclaimers... I'm not an expert. The only thing I offer in this area is some experience, and some lessons I've learned over the last couple of years. As my friend Mark says, "Your mileage may vary." Second, I believe in the gift of preaching and its place in the local community. Proclaiming God's Word to a people leaning in to hear what the Spirit is communicating to them through prayerful listening, listening prayers, songs sung and sermons spoken is an awesome thing. I can't think of much in the world I would trade it for... Third, preaching happens in many ways, from many members of the community. There's no doubt that the elders of the church carry a significant portion of that, and there's usually one elder in particular who does the majority of that, but... the community is responsible to teach one another. I don't want anything I write about preaching to give anyone the impression that I think one person is the teacher and all else the students. We all sit at the feet of Jesus as learners, as seekers. And we all have things to teach one another... But given that some are particularly gifted...
