On the radio... with the Shack!- Update
I finished The Shack last night and will post my review later today- for now, let's just say "I'm surprised" and we'll leave it at that... :) It looks as though the radio show I'll be on today (9-10am, Pac time) will 1. Be more about the Shack than about the emerging church, so I'm glad to have read the book 2. Include William Young, author of The Shack, so, I'll get to meet the man himself 3. Be streamed live if you'd like to hear me try not to say anything stupid... Here's the run down: Relationships and Religion William P. Young of Gresham wrote a religious allegory as a gift for his children in 2005. Three years later, The Shack debuted. Without a standard marketing plan, and put out by a small, private publisher established specifically for that purpose, it's been a phenomenal success. (It's currently number one on the New York Times' trade paperback fiction list.) Reviewers have given it both ecstatic praise and condemnations of heresy for its humanizing portrayal of the Holy Trinity -- one in which God appears is a black woman called "Papa." Locally, The Shack has struck a chord with many Northwesterners...

Okay- your 15 minutes is up, Mr Hyatt...
Had a fantastic time meeting Paul Young and talking about the Shack and relationship vs religion today. A lot of fun... Some highlights- Got shown into the "green room"- basically a conference room where they park folks waiting to go on the air. It was just me and Paul Young, hanging out and talking for probably 20 minutes. He's an amazingly humble guy. This whole thing has taken him so much by surprise- he described himself as an "accidental author." This is a book he wrote for his kids and copied off (15 copies!) at Kinkos and thought that would be the end of it. Some that read it urged him not to allow it to be. 2.5 million copies later, 9 weeks at #1 on the NY Times bestseller list, Oprah is reading it right now and it's what they call in the publishing world "a phenomenon." And still- the guy is very, very humble- pointing everything to Jesus. Speaking of which, I mentioned to him that I had heard there was a movie in the works- and my fear that as Jesus-centric as this book is (it ends with the statement that someday, every knee will bow and...
