Missions, Misunderstood
Like the bob.blog? Many of you readers came here during the salad days when I was posting daily, ranting about church and saving the world. I still do some of that, but boy- the pace has slowed. Ernest Goodman (a pseudonym), however, is at the top of his game. You should read his blog Missions, Misunderstood Really good stuff... good missional thinking from someone who's been there and done that. The current series on the counterintuitve church is gold.

Not to be a buzz kill since this is clearly funny, but do you think that the holy week is something to make light of? I'm all for satirizing Bart Ehrman but I can't help but feel uncomfortable flipping through the presentation. I have a hard time rationalizing enjoying this, and instead of giving glory to God it seems to diminish his glory through satirization. Thoughts?

I think there's a time and a place for it. We make jokes about our closest friends, after all. As long as you recognize when it's time to take it very seriously as well, because obviously holy week is something to be pensive about. But, I believe God's glory is reflected in his sense of humor, and accepting our maybe less-than-perfect attempts at good humor. This sort of thing keeps it fresh rather than beating the same drum every year, and that's a good thing.
I don't think it's possible for us to diminish his glory. I could be wrong on that, I don't know what theologians would say, but it just seems to me that no matter what we do he always wins. We try to go against that, we lose. Stones cry out and all that. The big risk isn't so much diminishing him, but taking the wrong side and hurting ourselves.
I'm going to go on a limb and say I don't think God holds himself above satire. Since really when you think about it, what is the point of satire? It brings more clearly into focus the truth of the object of satire. Which in his case, is something worth thinking on.

Really well-said, Jen.

I think it is important to be cautious, Grant. However, I think there is a real honesty and a 'glory to God' moment throughout this piece — even within and underneath (ha - nice Lutheran theology there, sorry!) the satire.
The moment during the trial and crucifixion really gave me pause and nearly (nearly) brought a tear to my eye. As did Jesus giving a Resurrection Breakfast to his disciples.
I don't see this as bitterly satirical like Landover Baptist. I think it was clearly put together by a serious theologian.
Peace during holy week!

That was fantastic! I showed it to my wife and in-laws, and they all had a good laugh too. :)
